The Sad Christmas Playlist
Blog director Edie Carey shares her moody Christmas playlist, only for the most melancholy of music listeners :(
By Edie Carey
In honor of the holiday season, I’ve put together a list of sad Christmas and winter-y songs to help you get through 4 pm sunsets and bitterly cold days. Maybe they won’t make you feel better, but they’ll certainly match your mood. Curl up with some hot chocolate in front of your light therapy box and listen to these low-spirited Christmas tunes.
Silent Night - Sinéad O’Connor
Sinéad O’Connor’s cover of the famous Christmas carol is haunting and perfect for those sad and lonely winter nights.
Angel In The Snow - Elliott Smith
Although not explicitly about Christmas, Angel In The Snow is a great seasonal song, and Elliott Smith’s voice is absolutely matched for the sad Christmas vibe.
That Was the Worst Christmas Ever! - Sufjan Stevens
Sufjan Stevens’ 2006 Christmas album, Songs For Christmas, is fantastic all around, but this song stands out to me for the sorrow it encapsulates, clear from the title alone.
Christmas Song and If We Make It Through December - Phoebe Bridgers
Phoebe Bridgers has released several Christmas covers throughout the years, but these two are my favorite. Although deeply sad, both have a hint of optimism that has gotten me through some winters.
Christmas Time is Here - Mark Kozelek
The iconic Charlie Brown Christmas carol had to make this list in some form, and I thought Mark Zolekek’s cover best fit this playlist. (Shoutout Laura for the recommendation!)
Blue Christmas - Elvis Presley
Elvis Presley’s crooning in this Christmas song fits the lonely winter mood so well, and it's probably the closest thing to a love song on this playlist.
christmas will break your heart - LCD Soundsystem
You might not think LCD Soundsystem’s vibe would be fitting for a Christmas song, but on “christmas will break your heart”, they make it work.
White Winter Hymnal - Fleet Foxes
And to finish it off: Fleet Foxes’ iconic winter song, “White Winter Hymnal”. Have a wonderful holiday season, and I hope these gut-wrenching songs make your winter all the more gloomy.
